College Hoops 2K8 Review

2K8 basketball games just get it right. They offer some of the most realistic gameplay ever seen in a video game. If you are looking for a true sim, CH 2K8 is the game to get. You can run with multiple teams in your Dynasty mode (Legacy, create and easily modify players, and what's neat about this year's game is you can creat a prospect at the high school level, play with him in the summer camp games. With your team you can monitor all of these players progressions to find out who you want to recruit. It is really a nice-added feature to the game. As for the gameplay itself, there are still some minor issues: 1). the CPU on your team does not get back in transition to guard other players very well. And by the time you switch off to the player with the ball, it's too late. They have already scored. 2). too many missed open layups and mid-range shots. Star players on North Carolina just don't miss open shots like that! 3). Graphics, though decent, still look a bit cartoonish to my standards. The arenas look O.K., but not nearly as good as you'll find in March Madness 08. Player models are good, but again, I don't think they come close to what MM has produced. 4). The menu screens, though minor, 2K really needs to update those. They get the job done, but they're a bit outdated. Again, MM 08 has the better menu screens. 5). The color commentary: 2K8 needs to really work on this. It's just not as exciting as it should be.

Overall: this game is fun to play besides some minor issues. It lacks in certain areas compared to MM 08, but I think overall it offers the better gameplay and depth and freedom you will want in a college basketball game this season. 8-10.

Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007

Firstly, your opponent that quit on you R. Conover, may have been me.I left a game last night because my opponent had a terrible Internet connection.

Anyway, for my review.WEPES2007 is a mixed bag, with mostly good aspects. The gameplay is great, like it always has been.My biggest gripe from last year's game has been fixed, and that's the fact that my teammates now run for a loose ball.Last year, they didn't, and that completely put me off from the game. This year, however, my teammates now work as a team. They also attack the opposition when they have the ball, whereas they ran away from the ball-controller last year.Just this one fix has greatly increased the enjoyment level over last year's version.

Some people will complain that it's too hard to shoot, when it's actually realistic. If you are able to get set and have time to line your shot, it's not that hard. But as we all know, that's not likely to happen. So, you'll take shots on the run a lot, and those are less accurate. That's realism.I would rather have it hard to make a shot and have a realistic score than to have a 13-10 final. This is not an arcade style game, it's sim.

The graphics are disappointing, not much of a step up from last year's PS2 version (which I owned and reviwed, and did not like).Luckily, I have an HDTV, so I get the clarity and crispness of the game. However, if you do not own a high-definition television, don't expect the look of it to wow you.Closeup, the players look good.On the field, they look like they always have.

The audio is virtually untouched. The announcing is accurate, the crowd sounds good, and the menu music is awful. The menus themselves are pretty ugly too, I forgot to mention that.

Online play is great, as long as you're not playing an opponent who has a bad connection. That, of course, can happen with any game though. If you are playing an opponent with a good connection, you can have brilliant experiences online. The entire game is exciting online, very fun.

If you have enjoyed past versions of Winning Eleven (Pro Evolution Soccer), you will like this one. There is still a lack of clubs, but that's nothing new.You CANNOT edit team names, logos, flags, or stadiums. But, since I'm not a diehard international fan, I'm not bothered by that. The gameplay is where it's at, and Winning Eleven is great at gameplay. If you're a fan of the franchise, fan of soccer, own a 360, and have $50 (not $60), you should go buy the next-gen version of the series.

This game is not that bad. It doesn't have mind blowing graphics like a next gen game should. It is sort of like Fat Princess meets Little Big Planet. I paid $60 bucks for it and honestly it is not worth that much. This is a $30 game at best. It is fun chopping up characters and skating around in their blood, but it does get old especially when it is not an open environment. The boss levels are a bit challenging so there is some hope. Unfortunately, you never really die. I mean you do, but you keep coming back to where you left off. There are 50 trophies to get, if anything that should keep you interest for a while. I tried to play online, but I don't think a whole lot of people own this game yet (nobody there). This game will probably become more popular as the price drops. It is fun and the animations are humorous so if you got cash to burn or you have a twisted sense of humor like myself then add this game to your collection otherwise rent it or wait till the price drops.

Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge Review

Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
Average Reviews:

Crimson Skies is a superb blend of action, comedy, camp, and noir. Do you like Indiana Jones? Do you like James Bond? How about Casablanca? How about the classic Private Eye stories full of mobsters and dames? Crimson skies is a flying game backed by a superb action-adventure story line, and yes it's worthy of comparison to the above. Note: I don't have XBox Live, so this review is entirely based on the singleplayer. That said, I love this game enough to give it 5 stars for singleplayer alone. Live is the super atomic icing on the cake. And I'll try to keep this pretty much spoiler free.
The story(10/10): You are Nathan Zachary, a former playboy who met unfortunate circumstances (along with the rest of the nation) and is fighting his way back to the top. Along the way, you form a rag-tag band of air pirates as you explore this strange quasi-America and unravel a mysterious plot.
The immersion factor(10/10): Amazing. From the moment the intro cutscene pops up, you're going to be completely immersed. Segments like this do tons to push the story, and you're going to love savoring every moment of them. You're quickly thrown into the fray as you hop into the pilot seat. This game makes you remember why you always wanted to be a plane/ bird/ pilot/ superhero/ mobster/ pirate/ (you get the idea) as a kid.
Controls(9/10): The first "level" is a mini-tutorial that's quick and fun. Controls are super natural and goals are (almost) always extremely clear, so you have tons of time to enjoy flying and rarely have to spend time wondering about objectives.
Value(9/10): The singleplayer is long enough to please and worth every moment. I'm not even finished yet, and I would be 100% content if the game was only as long as I've played to. Very nice. There's not much replayability aside from collecting more tokens or exploring more areas, but for some (like me) it'll be more than enough to warrant a few more games.
Overall: This game is FUN. The story needs to be a movie yesterday. The controls can be picked up instantly, but there's plenty of room to grow in skill. The gameplay ranges from frantic dogfights to free-form exploration. Yes, you will find yourself just skimming a lake to see the water splash on the camera, or buzzing through a canyon to test your skills. The combination of graphics, control, and gameplay combine for what may be the best flying experience ever. Sure, die-hard sim fans will gripe about the realism. But do you ever really want too much realism in an action-adventure? I think not.
Bottom line (9.5/10): I think this game is going to start showing up on a couple "Top games of all time" lists. Not THE top game, but definately not far.

The ability to manipulate time is but one of the many interesting and fun facets of this FPS.Not unlike F.E.A.R. you can slow down time (bullet time) and rush your enemies in order to take them out before they can even draw their weapons.Timeshift takes that a step further by giving you the ability to stop time alltogether or to reverse time. It's a novel concept, but it is starting to get a little tired. That being said, it doesn't necessarily detract from the overall experience of Timeshift. The graphics look pretty polished (still not as good as Gears of War) and it's pretty amazing to watch explosions in reverse time.I experienced some mild framerate issues during one timeshift, but it hasn't happened again. There are many situations that require you to manipulate time in order to get through the level. For example, a hallway might get decimated before you have a chance to walk through it.No problem.Simply reverse time, watch the hallway reassemble, and you're on your way. There's a little bit of platforming, lots of shooting, and plenty of bodies flying to satisfy most FPS fans.I guess the only real downside is that it resembles F.E.A.R. too much in it's gameplay. There isn't any real horror element to speak of though. The plot of Timeshift does mirror F.E.A.R. in that you are pursuing a crazed leader bent on domination, just in an alternate reality so to speak.Despite it's similarities to F.E.A.R. I still recommend this title. The ability to manipulate time is enough to keep you satisfied and intrigued.

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection Review

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been waiting for this game for months and I finally got my copy one day after release thanks to prime shipping from Amazon. The main reason I wanted this game was becuase of "Funhouse".I was addicted to that game back in my freshman year of college (1991-92) as we had it in our dorm's common area. That game caused many people to skip classes and skip dinner just so they could put Rudy to sleep and nail him in the mouth with the pinball! So much fun!

So, to the game, my expectations were rather low due to the fact that it was delayed for so long.Usually, that means there are problems.Well, 5 minutes after opening it, I was back in college playing Funhouse again. Now, there is nothing like playing pinabll on a real machine but the physics employed by this game are rather astounding in my opinion.Everything that I remember about the original game was in this. The one thing that may have been different is the sound of Rudy's voice.Maybe its the simulated surround sound I am using on my home theater for the WII or maybe they just couldn't get the original Rudy!

As far as the other games, I was not too familiar with them but I did play a few including Gorkon and Space Shuttle.I enjoyed them a lot and found them to have their own interesting set of challenges.

The overall game has several modes to it.There is a simple go to the arcade mode where you can play most of the games (although I think some are locked). As you play, you have certain challenges to complete like get a certain score or hit this or that. When you achieve these, it may give you the opportunity to unlock another game or give you more credits (you need credits to play some games and you start with 20...but it is very easy to get more).

I played the Challenge mode where you play each pinball machine where you have to achieve a certain score before moving to the next machine. You get three tries on each machine to get the score or the challenge ends.I made it to the fourth machine (Funhouse) but, ironically, I couldn't get the required score to move on.

There is a tournament mode but I did not try that yet but it appears you can play with only one person.I assume you must play against AI somehow.

There is another mode that I could not open as I hadn't built enough credits yet so I can't comment on that yet.I will post an update as I progress in the game.

Overall, for $30, this is going to provide me with hours and hours of enjoyment.Funhouse alone is worth it to me but having the variety of games on there really increases the longevity of this game. The sounds make you feel like you are at an old arcade and the games seem to replicate the machines just like the originals.

Xbox 360 Cyborg F.L.Y.9 Wireless Stick Review

Xbox 360 Cyborg F.L.Y.9 Wireless Stick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great stick for playing pretty much any flight combat game on the 360. It uses Microsofts own wireless technology, so just like the controllers... you just hit the guide button and you are ready to play. It has two settings via a switch for different games. Most everything uses the A setting and only a game or two use B. The stick comes with a little plastic wrench that allows you to adjust stick height and button placement, which is really nice if you hands are bigger or smaller than the default setting.

The aesthetics(look)of the stick is slick. Better than the other two out there(Ace Edge and Madcatz older stick). The acceleration is handled by a slider towards the back of the stick, which offers a perfect amount of tension so you dont overshoot your target speed. Button placement is perfect and allows you to easily maneuver through the most difficult of tasks. The stick twists for rudder control.

Battery life is the same as Microsofts gamepads, about 20-30 hours. You cannot use charge and play battery packs with this, only AA's, as the bottom of the stick wouldnt have allowed for the extra clearance needed for them... which is just fine. The stick is stable whether on a table or in your lap. It comes with attachments for your lap that can be attached or not.

My only gripe with this stick and why it didnt get a 5, is the fact that Madcatz themselves told me that this stick had rumble feedback and unfortunately, it doesnt. I love rumble feedback in games and doing without it took a lot of getting used to. luckily, I have a transducer attached to my theater chairs to give that kick. The tension in the stick is also just a tad loose for my tastes, not terrible... but I love it tight and unfortunately, there is no way to adjust it(other than buying your own tighter spring)

Overall, it is a great stick and perfect for armchair pilots such as myself. Feedback would have made this the perfect stick. As-is though, the wireless makes up for it and creates an awesome in-game flight experience that works perfectly with every flight game on the 360.

Army of Two: The 40th Day Review

Army of Two: The 40th Day
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I must admit I was quite excited for The 40th Day. I enjoyed the previous installment in the series and had fairly high expectations for the second. So I sat down and put the game in and waited to be wowed. And then I waited. And waited. And waited some more. And then the credits rolled.

The 40th Day isn't an awful game but all the things that made the first game memorable like the co-op mechanisms, the tongue in cheek bromance, the ambiguous morality and the hard fighting brutality were completely underdeveloped here. The strength of a sequel over a new title is that a dev team can take all the popular aspects of a previous game and with that previous experience up the ante and redeliver a superior product based on those known strengths and weaknesses. Instead with the 40th Day you get exactly the same thing as before with an even thinner story (which I didn't thing possible) and a less engaging aesthetic. There is basically nothing here that makes me believe that a single lesson was learned from the previous title.

The controls are wonky but not intrusively bad. I did have an unexplainable bug where after I came back from turning off the game the Y-axis reset to un-inverted and I couldn't change it back. So if you're a freak of nature like me and play with an inverted Y-Axis be on your guard. The bug might make this game unplayable.

Also be warned: if you're looking for single player play time then don't put down your money on buying this game. I finished this game in less than six hours on Hard. There are a few unlockables but nothing to make it worth really playing through the campaign again. My recommendation would be to rent it and based off how much you enjoy the multi-player consider buying a copy then.

As far as the actual game play is concerned I was never once really engaged. The enemies have a very limited number of very jerky animations and their AI is unsatisfying. Like many poorly designed games that place an emphasis on the use of cover you'll often find yourself feeling like you're playing a game of wack-a-mole where you sit behind your cover and they sit behind theirs as you wait for them to lean out to ineffectually spray bullets at you. The enemies are not challenging and most of the episodes were you find yourself being challenged is when due to the design of the spawn points and the poor camera angles a half dozen opponents appear behind you. They're mostly carbon copies of each other, some with helmets and some with body armor but it's all the same deal. This is mixed up by having the occasional mini-boss which is decked out in heavy armor and has a special weapon like a Gatling gun or a grenade launcher. Between the combat cover mechanic and the cheesy pseudo-anime looking enemies I felt like I had traveled back in time fifteen years and was playing Time Crisis at the arcade again and not in a good way.

This is all interrupted by situations where you can take hostages and/or rescue civilians. While that sounds fun, and it is at first, it wears off about an hour into the game due to the fact that it's the same situation every time and you're never presented with a reason or a reward that makes you care. This brings me to the "moral choices" in the game. One of the great ideas in the game that had simply terrible execution the moral choices have almost no affect on the storyline or the game play. There are some items and weapon parts you can get one way as opposed to the other but they're not really a big deal and don't much alter the way you play the game or the manner in which it is or isn't enjoyed. You could be totally good or totally bad without significant alteration in the basic experience.

The second incredibly disappointing aspect of the game was the weapon modification. This is another idea that just never really seemed to get off the ground which is bizarre considering the attention and marketing it got as a component of the game. While you can change out barrels and add new sights or stocks, etc there is very little substantial difference in the weapon platforms. Once you buy one modification or the other it makes little difference what your "base" weapon is. Also the modifications themselves are limited and uninspired. With all the focus placed on attaining money in the game you'll find little reason to actually spend it as none of the mods have a real "fun" factor to them and their effect on your game play is minimal.

The multi-player is adequate but I don't see any shooter fan who owns a copy of Modern Warfare 2 spending enough time play The 40th Day to justify a purchase. You'll also notice that since you didn't pre-order a copy you don't yet have access to the Extraction feature of the game for a month. Note to EA: put a $10 mail in rebate or a poster or the such in your pre-orderers boxes. Leaving out an entire portion of your game for one of the most critical time periods for the sale of your product is incredibly stupid. Basically what EA has done is create the illusion of pre-orderers getting "extra material" by taking it away from everyone else. What a clever way to screw over your customers. Fire the guy that came up with that.

Bottomline: The game is a decent but not impressive 6 hours duck and shoot exercise. Unless you simply loved the multi-player portion of the first game I wouldn't recommend paying retail for this one. A rental isn't out of the question for a lazy weekend but with Bioshock 2, Mass Effect 2 and Modern Warfare 2, all vastly superior sequels, out or soon to be I'm not sure I'd argue you'll have more fun with this in your 360.

Pros:
*Good looking graphics, nice textures.
*Not too hard, not too easy.
*Curb stomping.

Subjective qualities:
*Simple combat mechanics.
*Check point save system.
*Not overly tactical, very shoot 'em up.

Cons:
*Terrible story.
*Very short.
*Undeveloped core concepts (weapon mods and moral choices).
*Painfully cliche aesthetics.
*Simple AI.
*Goofy Achievements.
*Little variation in play.
*Wonky Controls.
*You don't get the whole game you pay for on release (Extraction).

Rock Band Wireless Guitar Review

Rock Band Wireless Guitar
Average Reviews:

Let me first off say that I bought this wireless Strat because I was hoping that it would work with Rock Band and Guitar Hero.It does not work with Guitar Hero. That being said the guitar seems to be a little more solid than the one that came with the game.A lot of people seem to like the Guitar Hero Les Paul better. However, I really play guitar, and I can honestly say that this one feels more like the real thing. The buttons allow sliding chords, the buttons feel more like frets than buttons, and overall it seems more second nature when playing.

Ultimately, this is a purchase for those who need freedom from the usb hub and 10 foot cable. As for Guitar Hero, well their taking sides has forced me as a consumer to choose sides.I am sticking with Rock Band.

Generally, this is a good shooter. At its heart, it's a co-op game where you team up with either an AI partner or a real life partner to take out numerous terrorist threats the world over.Is it groundbreaking? No.Is it entertaining?Yes.It's a good game that has good gameplay and graphics. However, it still doesn't compare to its cousins like Gears of War and Call of Duty 4.That being said, you will still most likely have a good time. The aiming and shooting mechanic mirrors that of Gears where you pull left trigger to aim and then shoot with right trigger. The game is unique in that it does require team work with your partner to get through some of the levels. The "aggro" system is a prime example of this. One partner essentially steals the spotlight and attracts the attention of most of the enemies, enabling the other partner to stealth around the battle field and get a better shot.I also like the ability to customize your weapons and gear (all for a price).Afterall, the point of the game is to get paid, and you do get paid handsomely for killing ruthless terrorists and protecting key targets. It's a fairly linear game, but you do have some options of completing secondary objectives that might take you off the beaten path. You would be hard pressed to get lost as there is a "GPS" system that basically shows you the path to take to complete the mission.I think most shooter fans will like this game.It just didn't grab me quite like Gears or COD4 did.

I should say at the outset that I have only played a few missions on the Single Player aspect of this game, and found them to be dull and very cut and paste from virtually every other shooter out there. That being said, Frontlines: Fuel of War brings one of the most challenging, deepest and expansive multiplayer experiences you will find on the Xbox 360 this year.Where other popular FPS games offer maps that are at most a mile wide at most (Halo 3, Call of Duty 4), the maps in Fuel of War get as big as ten miles across, with flyable jets and helicopters, Tanks, Light Tanks, Anti Aircraft Artillary, Humvees, and more. You can have 50 people playing on the same map and still have room to breath, room to tactically manuever and flank with your squad. What makes this game truly fun for me is that there is no "God weapon" that lets a single player dominates the match. Like a chess-game, Fuel of War offers players a mixture of player classes and equipment that allows them to counter any other player's kit or vehicle.Snipers, tankers, and helicopter pilots are unkillable in other games, but not in Fuel of War.A smart player working with their dquad can take any objective or silence any threat on the map, if they play their cards right. This is a great game and a very fun game.Highly recommended!

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When it comes to FPS's, and any other shooter for that matter, you have your current kings, namely: Halo, Rainbow Six (and all of it's "spawns", like GRAW) and Gears of War (still).Throw BioShock in there if you want... whatever. You get the point. Now - take from each of those games the best aspects... throw them together, and you have Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Simply put - you'll love this game, even if you don't like military or first-person shooters. If you're the type that strictly plays the single-player mode, then I'd rent first, just to be sure it's for you.For me, even the story mode keeps me coming back. This game is a BEAST, and it's a BEAST on every platform it's on - 360, PS3 and PC.

Infinity Ward understands FPS's - their absence was noticed immediately in Call of Duty 3, which sucked. They're back. This game is a few MINOR elements away from absolute perfection, in my opinion. And you don't get better than perfection.

I'll get the little gripes out of the way:

1. No Co-Op campaign. As frantic as every stage is, coupled with the fact that there's really no point on the game where you're not at least with ONE other player - usually more - I thought this should be available. It's pretty much standard now in the next-gen FPS's, but surprisingly absent here.Hmmm...

2. The whole 'friendly-fire' thing... I realize that this is realistic, but it's pretty frustrating sometimes - moreso here than in a game like Rainbow Six, simply because there's no easily identifiable icon or marker.I don't need THAT level of realism in a game - just my opinion.Yes, your recticle is red if it's on an enemy and green for a friendly, but during all of the fighting, that's really hard to see.Coupled with the fact that a lot of the enemies are wearing uniforms pretty similar to YOURS, you may end up accidentally shooting your squad more than you'd care to admit, especially on the Veteran difficulty level.

(That's really it for the 'gripes' - the other is more of an personal preference for me.I'd rather have more gameplay modes available in the multiplayer right off the bat, but I can also see how starting off with just the initial two works.

You may notice that I haven't complained about the duration of the story mode...while short, I doubt that any of the other reviewers that are slamming it have "breezed through in a few hours" on any difficulty higher than Sick Infant - that's before Rookie, if you're wondering. The story is compelling; there are actual moments where your chest and heart actually POUND - tell me the "All Ghillied Up" stage didn't have you holding your breath in real life, I dare you.Other games, while significantly longer, don't always fill their time with substance.A game like BioShock doesn't have an online mode, so it's story HAS to carry it entirely.Halo 3 is longer, sure... but most of it is retracing your steps back through previously played boards. No thank you.Apart from an effective story mode, this game's "bread and butter" is in the online multiplayer.Just like Halo 3.Just like RB6: Vegas.Just like Gears of War.Online play is what will keep this game, and others, being played for years to come.)

...and that's it, folks.Nothing else bad here.AT ALL.Period.

Gameplay - the game is phenomenal.Even if the campaign is rather on the short side (took about 6 or so hours playing on Normal - Veteran or Hardened will probably double that time, plus some) it is undeniably entertaining. While it may not necessarily be breaking new ground as far as plot, it STILL is far more engaging that Rainbow Six: Vegas's campaign mode, which is great, as well as Gears of War and even the mighty Halo 3. (just my opinion) (A+)

Graphics - arguably the best on any console, period.I give it the nod over Gears of War and BioShock - this is the best looking game I have ever played, and it runs (with all the chaos going on) at a smooth 60 frames per second is 1080P HD glory. The word gets thrown around alot with these newer systems, but this game is truly Photo-Realistic. The only thing I've seen comparable would be Crysis, another military shooter -and that's (not surprisingly) a PC-only game at the moment. It absolutely does not get any better than COD4. (A++)

Sound - as good as anything out now.The musical numbers are all spot-on, and the dialogue and combat chatter is phenomenal.Top notch all the way around - no "forced" sounding acting here. This games sounds like it was recorded during actual combat. (A+)

Multiplayer - time will tell if it will stand up to the insanely deep Halo Multiplayer mode, or the ridiculously addictive multiplayer modes on GoW or RB6, but even in this early stage COD4 is more than holding it's own.Choose from a preset variety of classes - sniper, assault, heavy gunner, etc. and get to killing.Kill enough and eventually unlock the ability to create your OWN class - and that's where the fun really gets going. There's a rank structure, but with there being absolutly ZERO offical multiplayer achievements, hopefully this will minimize people's tendency to cheat. (big problem on RB6)Ranking up does have it's privileges, however...different weapons, customizations for those weapons (scopes, skins, etc.)How new players feel about playing months from now when the majority of their combatants have superior equipment remains to be seen...balancing could be an issue there. The way it's set up though, if you're good at FPS's (and you know who you are), you will be alright. There's some work to be done with the team balancing...and I would prefer the ability to choose which maps I play on during ranked matches, but all in all, pretty solid.(A)

Replay Value - extremely high, even with a relatively short campaign. All of the achievements for the game come from the Campaign mode, yet over half of them require you to beat the game on one of the two harder difficulty levels. (not recommended for first-timers - frustration WILL ensue... as well as bullets, grenades and dog bites)Hell, even the TRAINING MODULE is fun and gets replay - Halo can't say that. This game is ridiculous.Even as varied as multiplayer is by nature, the Prestige Mode adds a new level to it.Make it all the way to Level 55, then you have "a tough decision" to make... (A+)

Overall - Dangerously Good.I give it an A+, or a solid 9.9998 out of 10 (I stand by the fact that a co-op campaign would render a potential Call of Duty 5 pointless)This is one of the best games ever. After playing the Beta earlier this year, I proclaimed that this could be a sleeper for Game of the Year, while everyone else was obviously sold on Halo... maybe a few for BioShock. This has them both, hands down. The only surprising part is how convincingly better this game is than the other GOTY frontrunners. All other FPS's (particularly military FPS's) need to take notice - this is BY FAR the best ever. (Note to Tom Clancy and the folks at UbiSoft: you have work to do for that next Rainbow Six. The bar is WAY up there now... don't disappoint)

A definite must own, especially for online players - this is the best for this year.No not Halo - Call of Duty 4.Period.The only thing I see that could pull people away from this even for a moment would potentially be Grand Theft Auto 4.

Preliminary review. Playing it right now.

Repeat this mantra "Not a sim, Not a sim, Not a sim..."

If you read many of my other game reviews you'll see I like driving games. Specifically sim driving games. Being I am no where near a millionaire I probably will never drive any of these cars in my lifetime. So I think of sim driving games as a way to bring a bit of realism into my living room. When I got Blur from my game rental place, I was about to pack it up and send it back to them asap. I had seen the clips and other snippets of the game and a driving game with power ups and all that had no place in my stable of _real games_,
or so I thought.

My son and I really enjoy Mario Kart Wii. This game is a more grown up version of that. The commercial you see on TV now with the mario like character wanting to play a grown up racing game is spot on. It combines the fun of that with real cars. Unlike Mario Cart, you can get up to 3 power ups and keep them in a queue on your back bumper. When you want to use it hit X and fire away.

Models: +
First off I love the realism of the car models. They really do look pretty good. You start off like many other car games of this genre and you get a hooptie to begin with.

Fan system: +
Play this online and you earn fans. Fans are like Rock Band games ( musical ones not the company) and these fans can get you benefits, boosts and cool toys for your ride.

Lights: +
Lights unlock the cars. The higher you finish, the more lights and better cars you can get.

Damage: +/-
Damage in this game is pretty good. Based on an arcade model of damage that is. Your car will be blown up and shot into the air, land on its roof and keep going. Its done well though and not too kitschy.

Lack of Achievements: +
As of right now I don't have any and that is a good thing, some games seem to launch them at you for just logging in. Not here. You have to complete some tough challenges to get a _sticker_. These are your badges that can be seen as a trophy. 4 complete challenge = 1 sticker. These are tough.

Power Ups: +
This game has a ton and each are a blast, literally. Of course there is nitro and boosts to speed. Also there are some really crazy ones that can take your opponent out in a blaze of less than glory.

Ease of play: +
This is very easy to control with the six axis controller. Right trigger is gas, left brake and X is fire off the next power up you have in your queue.

First Impression: +
Overall this game has won me over. Its definitely something you would see in an arcade, but that doesnt make it any less fun. Take it as it is and I think you will have a good time with this game.

I plan on playing this a ton this week and will update this review as I get more into it.

Thanks for reading my review.

Lost Planet 2 Review

Lost Planet 2
Average Reviews:

When you see critic reviews all but outright lashing at the game to fan reviews saying it's a ton of fun and not worth the amount of negativity thrown at it, you can see that this is clearly a game that has a "try out and see" approach. Not to say Capcom has had completely flawless run-ins with the press lately. Devil May Cry 4 had a great first half only to be marred by the entire first half literally played backwards by a different character. Or the really stellar Resident Evil 5 that everyone complained was exactly like Resident Evil 4 when other games are just like prior entries too. So when one hears of oddball game mechanics and approaches to their games in the reviews, you might be a bit hesitant to give Lost Planet 2 a try but this is a game where the reviewers are right in saying this isn't completely flawless but the low scores and negativity thrown at it seems a bit overdone and the best way to gauge whether this game is for you is just play it and see what you think. Stunning graphics, some great score and some of the biggest bosses you'll ever come across also comes with some screwy controls, a near pointless plot and not to mention a game that seems programmed specifically for co-op and you got the makings of a great game that's only good and worth playing but man, if only somebody looked at the bigger picture and said "hey, wait a minute....what if we were to change...?"

Story: The story takes place on the planet E.D.N. III, a once-frozen planet completely covered in snow now largely changed in the 10 years since the adventures of Wayne and Co. in the first game. Instead of having one character go through the game chapter-hopping, they all involve different groups with different objectives that will come to a head near the end. What this means is that the story feels slightly inconsequential since you control nameless dudes who are trying to do something you're not quite sure yet against people you're not introduced to. However this also means some diversity in locations so you can hop from frozen tundras to thick jungles to deserts and back which makes up for the repetitive-but-pretty all snow environments of the first game.

Graphics: Complain all you want about the games of Capcom but you can't argue against their graphic-making abilities which are pretty stellar. From Resident Evil 5 to Street Fighter IV to this, this company knows how to make some really impressive looking games and this game is no different. From the locales you'll see to the absolutely enormous bosses, the MT Framework engine that powers the game is quite a powerful one indeed. However there is some slowdown when things go boom a bit too big and on the train level which I'll get into later, I literally ran into a glitch where the shells required to load into the gun's cannon were floating in mid-air. But from a look standpoint, Lost Planet 2 certainly has the chops but it's not quite 100% smooth but it looks damn fine trying to get there.

Sound/Music: When things aren't exploding so loudly that it completely drowns it out, the music in the game is appropriately epic, intense and nicely bombastic. Things get exciting really quickly and the music used reflects it and that main menu music which you'll be hearing a lot of, I'm sure, is catchy but not so it becomes grating after the 105th damn time. Sound effects are also nicely made from the screeches and roars of the Akrid to the gunfire of the different weaponry, this is a game for your surround sound system or some great headphones. The same can't be said for the voice acting which feels appropriately Capcom. Not as much emotion and dialogue choices read exactly as you'd expect them to: almost flat. Occasionally they'll do some good work in other games but it just feels really iffy here.

Gameplay: Unlike games like say Halo 3, Borderlands, or Gears of War which can be played single player but the main bulk of fun comes in co-op, Lost Planet 2 in a way feels like it was designed specifically to be played with more than one person. And when you see the near brain-dead AI of your squadmates, it's easy to see why you need extra players. They barely shoot and half the time they stand there while you're running around trying to do the bulk of the work which makes the campaign feel really average but then you have some buddies and everything makes sense. Tactics come into play, players can be relegated to a specific weapon usage or task and strategies can be made more efficiently. Take for example Chapter 3-3 (the chapter nearly every reviewer has complained about, dubbing it the "train level"). In this chapter, you start off on a train traveling parallel to an enemy train so you can have one guy with a sniper rifle shooting guys from afar, one with a rocket launcher blowing up the turrets and enemy air support while a 3rd can carry a shield to soak up some damage and keep your other guys safe. Then there's the boss fight in which a huge sense of roles and tasks have to be laid out to each member: you're on a cannon which needs to be fired at weak points of probably the biggest boss you've ever seen. Those shells need to be loaded into the chamber, energized for quicker reloading and potentially given some help with a console that allows for quicker gun rotation. This is not done automatically and whoever is shooting has to rely on the other 3 to supply the shells, load them, energize them and help the rotation speed of the barrel or you're dead. And what if you take damage? Then you need someone to go below decks and activate the coolant systems which act as damage repairmen and gun cooldown. Not to mention there's gun turrets somebody can climb into to shoot down giant meteors or help shooting at the weak points. Think the AI will do all that on its own? Think again.

But this co-op has some side effects. The game operates on a lobby system where you can find a game for a specific episode within a specific chapter and hope one of them says "standing by" because that means they're in the menus and haven't started yet. If their status is "playing" however, you have to wait till they're done before you can come in as there's no join in progress or drop in/drop out co-op in the game. Also co-op can have slight frustrations involving the Battle Gauge. When you activate data posts or accomplish objectives, you add some points to a battle gauge but points get deducted if someone dies. So nearly every death can be treated as a surefire way to get people to yell at you since you're the one who keeps dying and getting your whole team closer to a mission failure. As far as the competitive multiplayer is concerned, it's fun but some issues from campaign carry over. Getting shot puts you in a stun animation, leaving you unable to fire back, heal or do much of anything except rolling or hopefully throwing a grenade which kills the other player first. Unlike games like Call of Duty or Halo where one-on-ones were won by skill and accuracy and which gun you brought, this game feels more like ambush tactics: surprise attack someone and shoot them first before they can do anything. Also nearly every mode has what you'll be doing a lot of in the campaign which is dealing with data posts. In both campaign and multiplayer, these data posts act like spawn points but unlike other games where standing in the area started the capturing, you have to mash B against the data post which leaves you completely vulnerable to weaponry and grenades. This can of course allow players to wait till you try to activate it then kill you while you're completely defenseless. But the modes and gameplay are rarely seen in multiplayer now which makes it quite unique to other games where it's mainly FPS and somewhat familiar.

Another gripe is how you unlock things. In a lot of multiplayer games, unlocks came through level progression: more you played, better toys you got to tinker with. In Lost Planet 2 on the other hand, some of that is unlocks while others have to be literally won from a slot machine. The more you collect those "?" boxes in campaign, the more points you add to your total which act as your "quarters" for the slot machine where you can win new weaponry, abilities that can alter how your character can behave in combat but mainly you'll be seeing emotes and "noms de guerre", in other words, nicknames. Emotes are done by pressing the Start button and either any D-pad direction or the shoulder buttons and they're strictly poses whereas noms de guerres are kind of like your callsigns but when you're being bested by players that have better weaponry or better abilities than you in multiplayer, it can be frustrating when all you keep unlocking are names.

That being said, the gunfights and Akrid encounters can be incredibly intense, the multiplayer from the first game had a very strong community and that'll no doubt be translated here and the game's achievements and trophies feel designed to do one thing: make you play the game over and over. Level up the different factions to level 99, kill an insane amount of enemies, collect everything from the slot machine and play the chapters a whole bunch. This is one of the longest 1000/Platinums you'll find. The game is certainly not without its faults but avoiding the game altogether isn't really the way to go about it. Unless you're a diehard fan of the first or loved the demos in which case you most likely already played it or about to, give the game a try since everyone will react differently. Some of you will love it so much you won't mind playing the game for the next year or more while some others will think it's just way too flawed and backwards and not worth your trouble. I like it and I'd recommend but keep in mind this is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of game so I'm in the former camp so just have to see which camp you fall into.

Lost Planet 2, offers deeper insight into the world of E.D.N III,the fictional NEVEC (Neo-Venus Construction) Corporation's attempt to controlthe flow of Thermal Energy (T-ENG), that is the key to survival on the harshplanet, and the uncertain fate of mankind as they battle the huge insectcreatures known as Akrid. A decade has passed since the events of the firstgame, and the face of E.D.N. III has changed dramatically. Terraformingefforts have been successful and the ice has begun to melt, giving way tolush tropical jungles and harsh unforgiving deserts. Players will enterthis new environment and follow the exploits of their own customized snowpirate on their quest to seize control of the changing planet.

Gameplay
Lost Planet 2, like the original game in the series, is a third-person shooter featuring huge boss battles, challenging terrain and the ability to pop in and out of battle mechs, known in-game as Vital Suits. The primary difference in gameplay this time around hinges on the inclusion of RPG gameplay elements. Players can now customize many of the aspects of their playable snow pirate, including his physical attributes, clothing and to a certain extent, weaponry and gestures. Players will control these customized heroes across 6 interconnected episodes, creating a truly unique and interactive experience that changes depending upon the actions of the players involved. With this concept, players will have the opportunity to engage in the story in a much more dynamic way as plot threads evolve from different players' perspectives.

Multiplayer
Beyond the deep single player mode, Lost Planet 2 is loaded with extensive multiplayer modes and play options. This includes 16-player online versus action, as well as a 4-player online co-op support and two-player split-screen functionality in local co-op play. In addition, the intense and action packed campaign mode allows for 4-player online co-op play to clear mission objectives with friends, unlockable weapons and the ability to resurrect fallen comrades.

Weaponry and Gadgets
No action game would be complete without an arsenal of weaponry, and to that end Lost Planet 2 comes loaded with a huge variety of hardware for players to unleash on unsuspecting enemies. Machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, lasers, sniper rifles, grenades and a host of other weapons are scattered across the game. However, Lost Planet 2's biggest weapons come on two legs: the heavily armed and armored robotic Vital Suits return in greater numbers and variety than the first game. There are Vital Suits that transform into other vehicles, and even some that hold up to three players and take multiple players to operate. Also, the grappling hooks that made the gameplay in Lost Planet a true 3D experience are back, allowing gamers to gain tactical advantage by quickly scaling buildings.

Key Features

4-player Co-op Action - Team up to battle the giant Akrid in explosive 4-player cooperative play. Teamwork is the player's key to victory as team members are dependent on each other to succeed and survive.
Split-screen Functionality - Share your Lost Planet 2 adventure with a friend locally with split-screen co-op play.
Exclusive Characters - Xbox 360 players get the added experience of the inclusion of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago from the Gears of War games into the world of Lost Planet 2.

The single player is great, you wont be disappointed!Graphics are awesome, and the backdrops are very nice eye candy. You can switch out your guns for different ones of your choosing when you come across certain "special crates" scattered around any given level, which is nice because that means you can switch up your play style when YOU want too.The single player campaign is short and sweet (prob 8-10 hours play time), the story doesn't grab you like MW2's, but enjoyable none-the-less.Assuming that the bulk of people buying this game are doing so for the multiplayer, i'll move on to that and devote the rest of my review to it.

I downloaded the demo for this game a little while ago and hated it.The controls were completely different then MW2 - i especially dislike that they use the right movement stick for ducking. Can't tell you how many times i try to shoot a guy and ended up ducking and shooting at the same time.So i put it away and went back to MW2, as i was playing i realized that - "i hate this game", i'm at the 4th prestige and have over saturated myself with it. I cant stand the quick kill quick death formula anymore, the horrible spawn system, the team selection system, and especially the lack of team work i constantly come across. There is also the infamous "MW2 law", similar to "Murphy's Law", where anything can go wrong in a match and when it does, it always seems to happen to YOU.Ofcourse MW2 is a great game and a worthy purchase, but i personally have had my fill.

That being said, it was unfair to judge BFBC2 so quickly when i had put such an insane amount hours into MW2.So i picked it up again and gave it another shot...i was hooked!I was playing as a medic and realized that i actually wasn't focused on killing people, i was running around reviving my teammates and dropping health packs to keep them going, ofcourse i took out a few stray enemies here and there."Wow, this is different" i thought, and when i realized how many points i was racking up i liked it even more.I"m actually HELPING my team and getting a ton of points for it.That brings me to the most important aspect of the multiplayer, you are actually encouraged to work as a team, which is a nice change of pace compared to MW2.I get just the same amount of points for shooting someone as i get for reviving them.It works beautifully.

There is a leveling up system which is similar to MW2, nothing as developed though, but there is enough there to keep you coming back for more and you do unlock different sights, guns, gadgets etc...Some are just for the particular class you use i.e - medic unlocks larger health packs, but others are more general and can be used for any class, i.e - heavy vehicle perks.

The first BFBC had 2 deal breakers for me.One was their crazy health system where you jam a needle into your stomach when your health got low, which ofcourse is something you would have to do 50 times a match. The other was the lack of any kind of kill cam! It's no fun being sniped over and over again and having no idea where the sniper is when you respawn.THANKFULLY, both of those deal breakers have been removed.Your health regenerates (no needle to the stomach required) and there is a kill cam, you don't actually see the enemy kill you like in MW2, but you follow them around until you respawn so you know where they are and can carry out the proper justice.

Also, locating enemies is somewhat unique to this game, when you see an enemy, you have to press the back button on your controller and then a red insignia appears over their head and they show up on your entire teams map for a brief amount of time.I can't express how gratifying it was to spot 3 snipers on a hill, press the back button, and watch them get lit up by my team - rockets, bullets, you name it, it went their way. Also, you get assit kill points for things like that, again, encouraging team work.

BFBC2 is a great game, very different then MW2 but in a good way.If you need a break from MW2, give it a try, you wont be disappointed.Again, one of the most impressive things about the multiplayer is how it rewards you for team work and incourages it.If actually playing a first person shooter AS a team, not just "lone wolfin it" while you're IN a team, sounds good to you, pick this game up, you wont be dissapointed.

I gave this game 4 out of 5 stars because it's not perfect. What game is?I have experienced some issues actually getting into a multiplayer match (can't find a match, busy, error, whatever,it means that their servers are full and they can't handle it, and several matchs have ended abruptly due to server issues. But once you actually get into a match, it's a ton of fun.

FYI:Snipers, snipers, snipers! What is the deal, everyone and their Mom wants to be a sniper. It seems that atleast a third to half of the players in the game are snipers. Not sure why, they always have the least amount of points and seem to stay in one spot most of the game.......i digress.Switch it up!

***UPDATE (03/14/10)***

I've been playing this came for quite sometime (all medic, recon, and heavy vehicle upgrades have been unlocked), i must say that it has held up well, although some of its flaws are more noticeable, nothing major per say, but worth mentioning, 1st one being the most important.

1)It's much easier to be a skilled pilot then to be a skilled engineer w/the rocket launcher.

Apache helicopters with missles are extremly unbalanced. What i mean by that is it is far to easy for a skilled pilot to get an insane amount of kills, to the point of feeling unfair because it's so hard to take it down.None of the rocket launchers "LOCK" on, yes you can guide the rocket, but you can't actually "LOCK" on, which is frustrating. When playing 'rush' on the map featured in the demo (the snow map which takes place during the day), there is a powerful Apache on that map, but you're given a good amount of tanks which help with taking it down, so it's not that extreme.

But......

This unbalance issue is taken to a whole new level on the map consisting of the 3 islands (with an autumn backdrop), when you're playing 'rush', the defenders are given an EXTREMLY OVERPOWERED Apache helicopter when/if they reach the 3rd island.I've played 2 games thus far where my team was about to seal the deal and take the 3rd island when the defenders hopped in that freakin apache and annihilated everyone, it got so bad that most of my team dropped out, including myself. No point in playing any longer when you've died 5 times in a row because the apache is hovering over your spawn base firing rockets at you as you spawn in.I equipped the engineer class and so did half my team and we were shooting rocket after rocket trying to take it down, nothing was working.By my 5th death in a row, of not be alive more then 30 secs, i dropped out.

The first time it happend, it was extremly frustrating because my team was actually good, everyone was playing their role well, that's why it seemed extremely unfair.

The second time, i knew the drill at this point and gave it 5min, if it wasn't taken down in that amount of time, we dropped out.At that point, it just becomes a waste of time.

This is by far the biggest flaw i've found in the game.Basically, you've invested 20-30min to get that far in a match, then putting all player skills to the side, it boils down to who can get to the Apache first. They need to either lower the health of that particular Apache or make the rocked launcher system easier to use against it, ie-better guidance, tracking, more powerful, something! It just seems incredibility unbalanced.

2)Spawning is a lot better then MW2, but could use a bit of work.

I was playing a 'rush' match and my team was defending and we were actually able to jump the spawn base of the attackers and smother them the entire match, they didn't get to set one 'com station' off, seemed unfair for the other team, we should'nt have been able to do that.

Also, i've spawned into mortar strikes twice (spawning on a teammate), that was purely bad luck on my part though, nothing against the game.

3)Match making protocol can use some work.

I've found it useful to hit/hold the 'back button' when i first get into a match because some of the time i find that i'm put on a team that only has, let's say 7 people, compared to the other team which as 12.Or i'm put on a team where the top player has 500 pts and the other teams top player has 1600 points, usually a good measure of how "good" your team is going to be.

Again, my rating still stands, it's a great game and a ton of fun, just be aware of the 3 island map playing rush, try to get to that Apache first, if not, be ready for game over.

Halo 3: ODST Review

Halo 3: ODST
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Concept: 7/10
Halo 3: ODST introduces a new Special Forces Recon Soldier for the Halo Universe. The Orbital Drop Shock Trooper is a darker, ligher armored version of a Spartan with silent weapons. That's pretty much it.

Story: 9/10
The story is very well written, well told, and well acted by Firefly and BSG veterans. It is really entertaining and one of the best parts of the game. However, it is told through flashbacks and is somewhat difficult to understand your first time through. You might be confused at times, but in the end, it all makes sense.

Gameplay: 8/10
It's Halo 3, with a couple new guns and a slight improvement to the health system. Your character sounds 'in pain' when your health is low, reminding you to stay behind cover. There's also a night vision visor that you can toggle on and off. Unfortunately, the game seems too dark if you don't have your night vision on, and if you use it in areas that are fairly well lit, you're almost blinded. In the end, the night vision seems extraneous. The game would have been better if the dark areas were just a bit brighter, but still cloaked in shadows.

Level Designs: 6/10
There is an open ended city area where you can explore and Convenant troops are being dropped in to battle. This is new to the Halo Universe and it works quite well. Most of the game takes place in New Mobasa, a futuristic African City that is being invaded by the Covenant. The look and feel of the city is pretty impressive, but overall, the levels feel redundant. Fight in corridors, defend an area... You know you've got problems when the Campaign is only 5 hours long, and the Missions feel repetitive.

Sound: 9/10
The music is foreboding and adds to the grim atmosphere while the effects bring the battles to life.

Replay Value: 7/10
You can start the campaign after lunch and finish it before dinner.
There is a Firefight Mode which is like Gears of War 2's Horde Mode, but ODST features an additional challenge where each wave of enemies has a special behavior like "Dodges Grenades." This mode is for friends and invites only. I understand that Bungie is trying to prevent the Leroy Jenkins of the world from ruining the fun, but it really sucks to not be able to play a pickup game.
There are 3 new Multiplayer Maps for Halo 3, too.

Maturity - The game is rated M because the Halo series is rated M, even though the action is pretty tame.

Overall: 7/10
Buy this game if you're a Halo Collector, you've got a bunch of buddies that still play Halo 3 and will use the Maps and Firefight Mode.
Rent this game if you just want to play the Campaign. It's only 5-6 hours long.

I'd recommend waiting for the price to drop before buying ODST because if you spend $60, you're going to feel ripped off.
$35 for this game feels about right.

NOTE:Amazon and a bunch of other stores are selling ODST for under $40 now!
